How Do I Choose a Table Saw?

by admin on July 20, 2010

A table saw is one of the most important tools used for woodworking. Typically, a table saw has a round saw blade that is placed in the middle of a square work area. A table saw is powered by an electric motor. If you are looking to buy a table saw, you need to consider the following factors before choosing one:

The saw blade is the most crucial factor you need to consider while looking for a table saw. Table saws are available in many different types and shapes. If you are a novice in table saw operation, you must choose a table saw with combination blades. Also, check the size of the blade. Table saws with a 10-inch blade are most popular.

It is better to choose a table saw with large fence, as it provides you with larger work and thus allows you to easily cut larger panels, including 4 X 8 plywood sheets. The size of the rip fence of table saw can range between 26 and122 inches.

An ideal table saw for residential workshop would be the one with a 30” rip fence. If you want to cut larger materials, you can consider buying a table saw with 50” rip fence.

Another important aspect to consider is the electrical requirement of the saw. Table saws are available in either a single-phase or a 3-phase version. Single-phase table saws are mostly used in small and residential workshops. On the other hand, 3-phase versions are best suited for big factories.

Table saws having more than 2hp (horsepower) typically require a power source of 220 volts. You must decide beforehand whether you want a one-half horsepower motor that operates on 110 volts or a special 220 volt plug receptacle. It will be a better choice to buy a table saw that operates on 110 volts, unless you require a large table saw at a fixed location or your workshop is wired with 220v receptacle.

It is better to choose a table saw that has tilt for precise cutting. Table saws are available with both right as well as left tilt. It’ll be better for you to select a table saw that has a right tilt. This is because table saws with right tilt are not only more popular but also come with more accessories. In addition, they ensure more convenient cutting precision angles.

It is advisable that you choose a table saw that has safety guards. By doing this, you can avoid injuries while using the saw. Also, ensure that the table saw you choose contains safety features, such as blade guard, a spreader and anti-kickback pawls.

Now that you are aware of crucial factors to consider when buying a table saw, choose a table saw that best suits your needs.
